Artist Statement

“As a weaver, artist and teacher the studying of historical and cultural textiles nurtures my creativity. I draw on the colors, textures and patterns of these textiles to discover new interpretations of traditional weaving techniques that I apply to my artwork. Often in these pieces I utilize non-traditional materials such as baseball cards, corn husks, cell phone parts and recycled items.

During the last few years I have been profoundly influenced by Kente cloth, an intricately patterned and symbolic West African textile. Adapting traditional kente techniques to a floor loom, I create contemporary weavings that are relevant to my life and culture.”
